For many families, the garage becomes the place where stuff goes to be forgotten, and the car ends up in the driveway. With a weekend of sorting and a few smart storage solutions, you can reclaim the space.

Step 1: Empty, sort and purge

Pull everything out onto the driveway and sort into four piles: keep, donate, sell and toss. Be ruthless with broken items, duplicates and things you haven't used in years. Dispose of old paint, chemicals and batteries through your local household hazardous waste program, not the trash.

Step 2: Create zones

Group like items into zones based on how you use them: lawn and garden, tools and workbench, sports and outdoor gear, car care, holiday decorations and bulk household supplies. Keep the most-used items closest to the door.

15 garage organization and DIY storage ideas

  1. Get everything off the floor. The single biggest improvement.
  2. Wall track systems with adjustable hooks hold bikes, ladders, hoses and tools.
  3. Pegboard above a workbench keeps hand tools visible and within reach. Outline each tool so you know where it goes.
  4. Overhead ceiling racks store seasonal bins and rarely used items. Follow the weight rating and anchor them into ceiling joists.
  5. Sturdy shelving units with clear, labeled bins.
  6. Clear bins let you see contents at a glance. Label them anyway.
  7. A DIY lumber rack made from 2x4s keeps long boards and trim flat and organized.
  8. Bike hooks or a vertical bike rack free up floor space.
  9. A rolling cart for car-care supplies or gardening tools.
  10. Magnetic strips for screwdrivers, bits and small metal tools.
  11. A sports gear station: a bin for balls, hooks for helmets and a shoe rack.
  12. A long-handled tool rack for rakes, shovels and brooms.
  13. Small parts organizers for screws, nails and hardware.
  14. A fold-down workbench for tight garages.
  15. Lock up chemicals in a cabinet, out of reach of kids and pets.

Safety notes

  • Store gasoline only in approved containers, away from heat sources and living spaces.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher accessible.
  • Make sure heavy shelving is anchored to the wall so it can't tip.
  • Never run a car or generator in a closed garage, because carbon monoxide can build up quickly.

Keep it organized

Do a quick 15-minute reset once a month, and a bigger clean-out each spring and fall. Pair it with our seasonal home maintenance checklist.
